Unveiling the Chilling Depths of "The Darkness" by Ragnar Jónasson

Ragnar Jónasson's "The Darkness" plunges readers into a chilling and atmospheric world of crime and mystery set against the stark backdrop of Iceland's icy landscapes. With its compelling protagonist, intricate plot, and evocative prose, this novel marks the beginning of an enthralling new series that is sure to captivate fans of Nordic Noir and psychological thrillers alike.

The story follows Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir, a seasoned investigator with the Reykjavik police, who is abruptly forced into early retirement. Determined to prove her worth and solve one last case, Hulda chooses to revisit the mysterious death of a young Russian woman whose body was found on a remote Icelandic beach. Initially dismissed as a suicide, Hulda suspects foul play and embarks on a relentless pursuit of the truth, despite facing opposition from her colleagues and the looming threat of danger.

One of the novel's standout features is its protagonist, Hulda Hermannsdóttir. Unlike the typical detectives found in crime fiction, Hulda is a mature and complex character who brings a unique perspective to the genre. As she grapples with the challenges of retirement and confronts the demons of her past, Hulda emerges as a deeply human and relatable figure whose flaws and vulnerabilities only serve to make her more compelling.

Jónasson expertly weaves together multiple narrative threads, blending elements of police procedural with psychological suspense to create a gripping and immersive reading experience. Through alternating chapters, the reader is taken on a journey through time, exploring the intertwined fates of Hulda and a young woman who gave birth to a daughter in 1948. As their stories converge, secrets are revealed, and the true extent of darkness lurking beneath the surface is exposed.

Atmosphere plays a crucial role in "The Darkness," with Jónasson skillfully evoking the desolate beauty of Iceland's landscapes. From the icy streets of Reykjavik to the isolated fjords of the countryside, the setting becomes almost a character in itself, imbuing the novel with a sense of foreboding and unease that permeates every page.

The plot unfolds at a brisk pace, propelled forward by twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the very end. Jónasson deftly navigates themes of loss, isolation, and betrayal, crafting a narrative that is as emotionally resonant as it is suspenseful. The novel's unexpected and chilling conclusion leaves a lasting impression, setting the stage for future installments in the series.

In summary, "The Darkness" is a masterfully crafted thriller that delivers both heart-pounding suspense and thought-provoking depth. With its compelling characters, atmospheric setting, and taut storytelling, Ragnar Jónasson's latest offering is sure to leave readers eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Hulda Hermannsdóttir's journey.

Retirement is something we should look forward to. A new beginning, leisure time, time to do what we want, travel, hobbies, you know, the good life. However, Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir is not looking forward to retirement, she has months to go, but no 0lans. And, then, she is told by her super that she has two weeks. A young guy, that is a good officer, someone they really wanted, and she needed to go. Hulda was #hocked, surprised, dismayed, everything she could feel. One positive is that she could work a cold case for two weeks before she left her job from the Reykjavik CID. after decades of service.

Hulda is good at her job, and she chooses a new case that appeals to her. The detective who had the case did a very sloppy job, and she has a lot to cover. She also had to de ide what to do about her present case. Not much time, but a lot to cover, and Hulda is up to the job. She has a new man in her life, and she needs to decide whether to pick up the pace or leave it as it is.

This is an astonishing novel in many ways. Not what I expected, however, Hulda’s Character is one to revere. Could I handle myself as well as Hulda under the circumstances, probably not. As the case proceeds we find out a great deal about Hulda, the other characters, and how politics in the workplace plays out. This is noir at its best, and this is one of the plays that works the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new series from Ragnar Jonasson. Good Icelandic mystery books

Having read and enjoyed all 5 of Ragnar Jonasson’s Dark Iceland series, I was pleased to purchase and download the first book in his Hidden Iceland series on release date. His books are a great example of Scandinavian Noir.

The Dark Iceland series was set in the tiny, isolated fishing village of Siglufjorour in northern Iceland, the gorgeous setting of a Netflix mystery series, Trapped. It featured a young rookie policeman, Ari, who was often unhappy with its isolation.

This first book in the Hidden Iceland series, The Darkness, features 64 years old Hulda who is only a couple months short of retirement from the Reykjavik police department. Hulda dreads her upcoming retirement as she is dedicated to her work which fills her life. Her husband and daughter have died. She has no hobbies or outside interests. Her only friend is a handsome, charming doctor in his early 70s. She is vacillating between thoughts of marrying him and a lonely impoverished future.
Hulda receives a shock when her boss, Magnus, informs her that she must retire immediately. He has already assigned her cases to others in the department and is moving in a young male policeman to take her position. Hulda is distraught and resentful. She knows that she she has been a competent investigator, but that less experienced and dedicated males have been promoted to higher positions over her.

Hulda demands an extension of her time and Magnus relents. He agrees to only allowing her two more weeks providing she works on a cold case. Her choice is the case of the death of a Russian asylum seeker, Elena, whom a lazy, incompetent colleague barely investigated before declaring it a suicide. Hulda also learns of the disappearance of another Russian woman who was a friend of Elena and never part of the investigation.

While perusing the case of the two young Russian women, she runs afoul with the angry Magnus. Her last case involved the hit and run which severely injured a pedophile and new information has come to her boss’s attention. Then when she suspected that the two women might be victims of sex trafficking, she questioned a prominent businessman. In doing so she wrecked a covert police investigation of which she had no knowledge.

This is a dark, bleak, unsettling story. The Darkness features a dark, bleak setting, harsh climate, landscape, murder, misogyny in the workplace, the financial crisis, and secrets within Hilda’s sad past. The ending was unexpected and shocking. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
