Story Summary
A Driver's Emergency:
Mark Miles and his son Andy face a problem when their truck driver, Gary, falls ill and cannot drive. Just then, Kim Parker, a student working in the office, offers to help. She reveals she has a truck driver's licence and a passport, making her the perfect replacement for the urgent delivery to France. Andy joins her, eager to assist with navigation and French.
The Suspicious Journey Begins:
Gary gives Kim and Andy detailed instructions for the trip, including mandatory stops at specific truck stops. Unbeknownst to them, Gary makes a mysterious phone call, revealing their route and descriptions to an unknown person. Meanwhile, the duo picks up tables in Faversham and boards the ferry to Calais, where they notice the truck is leaking oil.
A Hidden Discovery:
At the first truck stop near Reims, Kim checks the oil leak and discovers a hidden box under the truck. Though puzzled, they continue their journey. At the next stop near Dijon, they spot a man in a green shirt inspecting their truck. He takes something and drives off in a red car, but Andy realizes the man mistakenly took their sandwiches—leaving behind a suspicious parcel.
Danger on the Road:
The red car follows them, and Kim deduces the parcel contains drugs. To escape, Kim stops suddenly, causing the red car to crash. They flee to a rubbish dump, where Andy throws the drugs into a skip. However, the man in the green shirt and another accomplice corner them. Andy escapes in the white car, while Kim outsmarts the men, trapping them in the skip.
A Happy Ending:
Kim calls the police, and Andy returns with help. The police arrest the criminals, and Kim and Andy finally deliver the tables to Lyon. Exhausted but safe, they share their long story with the waiting wine shop owner, ending their adventurous day with coffee and sandwiches.
