Beauty and the Beast

Story Summary

A Change in Fortune

Beauty is the youngest daughter of a rich man who owns many ships. She is kind, clever, and loves reading. Her two older sisters are selfish and only care about clothes and parties. One day, a storm destroys all their father's ships, and the family loses everything. They must move to a small house in the countryside. While her sisters complain, Beauty works hard and tries to stay positive.

A Rose and a Beast

When one ship is found, the father travels to the city, hoping to recover some of his fortune. His older daughters ask for dresses, but Beauty only wants a rose. On his way back, he gets lost in a forest and finds a strange palace. He stays there for the night and picks a rose from the garden. Suddenly, a terrible Beast appears and demands a price for the rose.

Life at the Beast's Palace

Beauty bravely decides to go and live with the Beast to save her father. At the palace, she is treated kindly and given beautiful clothes, her own room, and a magic mirror to see her family. Every evening, she dines with the Beast, who asks her to marry him. She always says no, but she grows to appreciate his kindness.

A Difficult Choice

After three months, Beauty sees in the magic mirror that her father is sick and alone. She asks the Beast for permission to visit him. The Beast agrees but makes her promise to return in one week. Beauty visits her father and helps him recover. Her jealous sisters try to keep her at home longer. One night, she dreams that the Beast is dying.

Love Breaks the Spell

Beauty tells the Beast she loves him and will marry him. At that moment, the Beast transforms into a handsome prince. He explains that a bad fairy turned him into a Beast, and only true love could break the spell. A good fairy appears and says that Beauty has proven that kindness is more important than appearance.
