Story Summary

1

Finn and Oonah's Friendship

The story begins with Big Baby Finn MacCool and his clever friend Oonah. They grow up together as good friends who love to play. They enjoy running, jumping, and swimming in the river. Oonah shows her cleverness by catching a silver fish when Finn asks her to. Their friendship is strong and happy. One day, on Finn's birthday, they see a magic gold fish that sings. The fish tells Finn that Oonah should be his wife because she can help him in life. This magical moment changes their relationship from friends to future husband and wife.

2

Married Life on the Hill

Finn and Oonah get married and live happily on a green hill with a beautiful view of the big blue sea. Finn is a good, strong giant, and Oonah is a good, clever wife. Finn decides to build a bridge across the water to help people. He shows his strength by throwing big stones into the sea to start building the bridge. His men help him with this big project. Finn is proud of being strong and doing good things for others. Their life seems perfect until one day, Finn sees something far across the sea that makes him worried and scared.

3

The Arrival of Big Bad Benan

Finn sees Big Bad Benan coming across the sea. Benan is a dangerous giant with a magic finger. Finn's men warn Finn about Benan's bad magic. When Benan arrives, he asks if anyone knows Finn. Finn and his men lie and say they don't know Finn. Finn runs home scared and tells Oonah about Benan. Oonah, being very clever, quickly makes a plan to protect Finn. She tells Finn to make a big baby cradle and get inside it. She wants to trick Benan into thinking Finn is just a baby. Finn follows Oonah's instructions and hides in the cradle.

4

Oonah's Clever Trick

When Benan arrives, Oonah tells him Finn isn't home and that she's alone with their baby. Benan notices the baby is very big, and Oonah explains that Finn is an even bigger giant. She asks Benan to help turn the house, which he does. Then Oonah makes bread rolls but secretly puts stones in most of them. She gives one with a stone to Benan, who hurts his teeth when he bites it. Oonah says Finn eats this bread every day. Then she gives the baby (Finn) a soft roll without a stone. Benan is surprised the baby has strong teeth, and Oonah says Finn's teeth are even stronger.

5

Benan's Defeat and Happy Ending

When the baby (Finn) cries again, Oonah says Finn gets angry when the baby cries. She tells Benan to give the baby his finger to quiet him. Benan puts his magic finger in Finn's mouth, and Finn bites it off! Without his magic finger, Benan becomes smaller and smaller until he's tiny. Tiny Benan runs away in fear. Finn and Oonah say goodbye to Benan as he disappears. Finn thanks clever Oonah for saving him. The story ends happily with Finn and Oonah safe on their green hill by the sea, with no more danger from Big Bad Benan.
