Story Summary

1

The Magic Beans

Jack and his poor mother have no food or money. His mother tells him to sell their cow. On the road, Jack meets a strange old man who offers magic beans in exchange for the cow. Jack agrees and takes the beans home. His angry mother throws the beans outside when she sees no money. The next morning, a giant beanstalk has grown overnight, reaching high into the sky. Excited by the magic, Jack decides to climb it.

2

The Giant's House

After climbing the beanstalk, Jack finds a road leading to a huge house where a giant's wife lives. Hungry, Jack asks for breakfast. The kind woman warns him about her husband who eats boys. When the giant arrives shouting "Fee! Fi! Fo! Foy! I smell a little boy!", Jack hides. The giant counts his gold coins then falls asleep. Jack steals a bag of gold and escapes back down the beanstalk, making his mother happy with their new wealth.

3

The Magic Hen

When the gold runs out, Jack climbs the beanstalk again. This time, the giant's wife is suspicious but still gives Jack breakfast. After the giant eats, he asks for his magic hen that lays golden eggs. Jack watches as the hen produces golden eggs before the giant sleeps. Jack steals the magic hen and brings it home. Now Jack and his mother have endless golden eggs and never go hungry. But Jack decides to return one last time.

4

The Magic Harp

On his third visit, Jack hides successfully. After breakfast, the giant asks for his magic harp that plays by itself. When the giant falls asleep, Jack takes the harp. But the magical harp cries out, waking the giant who chases Jack. Jack runs down the beanstalk with the giant following. Screaming for help, Jack reaches the bottom and calls to his mother for an axe.

5

The Fall of the Giant

Jack quickly chops down the beanstalk as the giant descends. The huge plant crashes down, and the giant falls to his death. With the giant gone forever, Jack and his mother live happily with their magic hen that gives them golden eggs. The story ends humorously with Jack asking for breakfast after his exciting adventure. They are now rich and safe, with no more giants to threaten them.
