Story Summary

1

The Broken Sky

In old China, the sky is blue every day. At night, the sky is black. One day, a blue piece falls from the sky. Then another piece falls. The children see holes in the sky. They count twenty holes! The day sky shows the night through the holes. The children are worried. They decide to tell Lownu about the problem.

2

Finding the Pieces

Lownu tells the children to find all the sky pieces. The children look everywhere. The little boy finds one piece. The little girl finds another piece. The big boy and big girl find pieces too. The baby says "Blue!" when he sees a piece. They find ten pieces in total. But there are twenty holes. The children are sad.

3

Lownu's Solution

At night, Lownu has an idea. She cuts her blue dress into pieces. She cuts her silver apron into pieces too. Now she has twenty pieces - enough for all the holes! Lownu takes a spoon and climbs a tall tree. She uses the spoon to put the pieces back. "Flip!" she throws a piece. "Flap!" it goes into a hole. She works all night to fix the sky.

4

The Blue Sky Returns

Morning comes. The sky is blue again! The children are very happy. They thank Lownu. Lownu smiles and tells them to go play. She invites them for supper later. The children enjoy the beautiful blue sky all day. At night, they go to Lownu's house for supper. When they go home, the path is very bright at night.

5

The New Night Sky

Lownu tells the children to look up at the night sky. They see many bright spots. Lownu says these are stars. The big one is the moon. The children love the new night sky. They say it is more beautiful now. Lownu's dress and apron pieces fixed the day sky and made the night sky special. The children are happy with their new sky.
