Story Summary

1

The Creation of the Gingerbread Man

An old woman and old man live alone without children. One day, the old woman decides to make a gingerbread man in her kitchen. She carefully shapes him with a head, arms, legs, eyes, a nose, and a mouth. She becomes very happy with her creation, calling him "my little boy" and puts him in the oven to bake. To her surprise, the gingerbread man comes to life and starts talking from inside the oven, asking to be let out. When she opens the oven door, the gingerbread man jumps out and immediately starts running away from her.

2

The Great Escape

The gingerbread man refuses to stop when the old woman calls him. He runs out of the kitchen door with the old woman and old man chasing after him. As he runs, he shouts his famous words: "Run, run! You can run. Yes, you can! But you can't catch me. I'm the gingerbread man!" He feels proud and confident that he can escape from them. The old couple continues chasing him but cannot catch the fast-running cookie. The gingerbread man enjoys his freedom and keeps running away, thinking no one can stop him.

3

Meeting the Animals

As the gingerbread man continues running, he meets different animals who want to eat him. First a cow tells him to stop because she wants to eat him, but he escapes. Then a horse tries to catch him too. Each time, the gingerbread man brags that he ran away from the old woman and old man, so he can certainly escape from these animals too. More animals join the chase, but the gingerbread man keeps running and repeating his catchphrase. He becomes more confident with each escape, believing that nobody in the world can catch him.

4

The Clever Fox

The gingerbread man meets a fox who seems different from the others. At first, the fox also chases him, but then changes his approach. The fox pretends to be friendly, saying he doesn't want to eat the gingerbread man but just wants to talk and be friends. The gingerbread man doesn't trust the fox and keeps running. Soon they reach a river that the gingerbread man cannot cross because he can't swim. The fox offers to help by carrying him across on his tail. The gingerbread man, seeing no other option, accepts the fox's help.

5

The Sad Ending

As they cross the river, the fox tricks the gingerbread man. First, he asks him to move from his tail to his back, then to his nose. When they reach the other side, the fox throws the gingerbread man up in the air and catches him in his mouth. The gingerbread man cries for help as the fox eats his legs and arms. Finally, the fox eats his head, and the gingerbread man can no longer speak. This is the end of the gingerbread man's adventure. The story teaches us that being too proud and not listening to warnings can lead to trouble.
