The Boastful Father

A miller says his daughter can spin straw into gold. The king hears this and takes the girl to his castle. He gives her a room with straw. "Spin this into gold tonight or die," says the king. The girl is very sad because she cannot do it.

The Little Man's Help

A little man appears and helps the girl. First, he wants her necklace. Then he wants her ring. He spins all the straw into gold. The king is happy. But then the king gives her more straw. The little man says, "Give me your first baby when you are queen." The girl agrees.

The Queen's Baby

The girl becomes queen. She has a beautiful baby. The little man returns. He wants the baby. The queen cries. The little man says, "Guess my name in three days." He gives her three days to guess his name. The queen tries many names but cannot guess correctly.

The Secret Name

The queen sends a messenger to find names. On the last night, he sees the little man. The little man is dancing and singing around a fire. He sings, "No one knows my name! Rumpelstiltskin is my name!" The messenger tells the queen.

The Happy Ending

The little man returns. The queen says, "Is your name Rumpelstiltskin?" He gets very angry. He shouts and stamps his foot. Then he disappears forever. The queen and her baby are safe. They live happily ever after.
